Map Help

What do the maps show?

These pages allow you to view maps of the current progress of the project in the NT.

It is possible to show the current coverage (locations for which sighting forms have been filled in), as well as the distribution for a given species.

The Starting Page allows you to select a convenient map as a starting point.

Coverage Maps

The coverage maps show the number of record forms returned in each grid square.

Species Maps

The species maps show the distribution of species in the map area. Coloured squares are layered over the map detail if the selected species has been found in that area.

A grey square indicates that fewer than 5 record forms have been returned for that area, and that the species was recorded on one of more of those forms.

A coloured square indicates that 5 or more record forms were returned for that area. If the square is light green then fewer than 10% of the record forms showed the species in question. If the square is dark red, then 90-100% of record forms showed the species in question. Colours in between indicate intermediate percentages,

What can I do with a map?

The simplest thing to do is click on the map. This will show you a list of all species found in the 1° square in which you clicked.

From the list of species, you can click on one of the species names to see a distribution map.

Compass Rose

You will also notice a compass rose to the side of the map.

Clicking on the black arrows will scroll the map in the selected direction by 50% of it's current size.

Clicking on the lighter, smaller arrows nearer to the centre of the compass rose will scroll the map by 10% of it's current size.

Icons

At the foot of the map you will notice a collecion of icons. These have a variety of functions:
Zoom Out Click this to 'zoom out' on the displayed area; the map won't get any smaller, but it will show more of the surrounding area in less detail.
Zoom In Click this to 'zoom in' on the centre of the displayed area; the map won't get any larger, but it will show a smaller area in greater detail.
Make Smaller The viewed area will become smaller, and the resulting map will show a smaller area but at the same level of detail as the previous map. This is useful if you have a slower link and don't want to wait for large images, or if you want to make the map fit on a smaller screen.
Make Bigger The viewed area will become larger, and the resulting map will show a larger area but at the same level of detail as the previous map. This is useful if you have a map that you like, and want to see the surrounding area.
Zoom out and Contract The image size will become smaller, but the area it shows will remain the same. Basically, this preserves the region that you see while shrinking the size of the resulting image on the web page. (Was that last sentence redundant?)
Zoom in and Expand The image size will become larger, but the area it shows will remain the same. Basically, this preserves the region that you see while making the image on the web page larger - good if you like the map you have selected, but want to see more detail.
Coarse Grid Displays the grid lines in 1° intervals. This is the default setting.
Fine Grid Displays the grid lines in 10' intervals. This is the target resolution for the atlas coverage.
Show Longitude & Latitude Displays latitude and longitude values on the map. Not displayed by default.
Hide Longitude & Latitude Don't displays latitude and longitude values on the map. This is the default setting.
All Species in the NT This will display a list of all species found in the NT along with the number of sightings. It can take a while to run. From this list, you can click on a species to see it's distribution.
All Species in Map This will display a list of all species found in the current map area, along with the number of sightings. It can take a while to run. From this list, you can click on a species to see it's distribution. Note that the 'current map area' is only approximated for efficiency reasons, so sightings from adjacent 10' grid squares may be included in the list.
